The Volunteer Resource For Southern Rhode Island

Volunteer Vocations, Opportunities & Venues

Seniors Helping Others specializes in matching the interests, availability, and talents of volunteers with the needs of individuals and local nonprofit agencies.

Training and supervision are provided for all of our volunteers. Participants are honored at volunteer meetings and socials, in our quarterly newsletter and at our annual recognition luncheon.

New volunteers fill out a form identifying their interests and qualifications. They may also be briefed in one-on-one orientations on programs and volunteer opportunities available to them. This information helps us match them with particular opportunities or needs for services.

Once a potential match is made the volunteer is introduced to the agency or person who made the request to discuss the specifics.

There is a large variety of volunteer jobs available. Many, but by no means all, involve working with other people. Most require no training beyond our orientation. Some may offer on-the-job training. And a few may involve a small degree of expertise, such as computer skills or being able to handle minor home repairs.

At any given time, a dozen or so nonprofit agencies in South County are likely to be posting notices with us (and, through us, with local newspapers), about specific volunteer jobs available with those organizations. In addition, SHO itself is always looking for volunteers to handle the services it offers directly to clients, such as medical transportation or friendly visitation. These volunteer opportunities also are posted on this site and in the newspapers.

The total number of nonprofit agencies in South County and Jamestown that are "community partners" of SHO generally varies from 110 to 140.
