We are in the midst of a warm and beautiful South County summer. Needs still take place for our neighbors and there are many opportunities for you to help with those. Starting with:
Where are our dog lovers? A senior with severe physical limitations needs your help to walk the dog. Walking the dog is shared by a few volunteers for this senior. Current needs are Wednesday and or Thursday afternoon—between 2 and 4 pm; perfect for our teen volunteers! Also there is an opportunity to help for the Thursday morning walk. Not only does the dog get out, but great, easy exercise for you too! Beautiful walking in the pier area of Narragansett.
Call the office to hear more about this great opportunity.
August 13 to August 17 : Washington County Fair, Richmond. The job is to take orders for food in the Pomona Kitchen booth. Open shifts are:
Thursday, August 14th 11 am to 3 pm
Friday, August 15th 3 to 7 pm or 7 to 11 pm
Saturday, August 16th 3 to 7 pm
Sunday, August 17th 11 am to 3 pm for 2 volunteers and 3 to 7 pm.
Volunteers work a 4 hour shift, receive a ticket to the fair for the day you volunteer, you get to order a meal at the end of your shift for the first two shifts, the late shift may be able to eat earlier. Call Deb at SRIV at 401-552-7661 if you want to go to the fair!
On going needs to support our seniors:
Transportation to and from medical appointments including dentists, therapies, and pharmacies to support healthy aging.
This is a very flexible opportunity. You can choose the geographic communities/area you wish to serve, days, times—there’s no schedule that you must follow.
Staff communicates by email and phone calls to let you know what’s available. You choose to accept or not what the presented needs are. There are just over 100 requests per month and a large group of volunteers which is needed to help our seniors.
Delivery of groceries and/or food from area pantries once a week is another way to help a homebound senior. Thursday mornings is a weekly delivery day from some area markets when our volunteers deliver to 2 or 3 senior homes, other times are individual pick-up and delivery from any market that offers that service. Days/times vary and are provided as an opportunity the same way that medical transportation scheduling does. Substitute volunteers are always welcome too.
Southern RI Volunteers has opportunities for volunteers on our committees too!. We welcome enthusiastic and fun folks to join our development and operations team. Members on this team are engaged in tasks that interest them. That could mean they help to plan or execute events, they help to plan marketing and outreach, education opportunities for individuals to learn about SRIV’s services and opportunities. Our team meets by zoom. The current meeting schedule is the first Monday of each month from 6:30 to 7:30 pm to discuss, plan and work one of two annual SRIV events, summer community events, SRIV outreach and ways to share SRIV’s mission, volunteer and client stories to educate our neighbors across our southernmost 12 communities in RI.
To join and learn more about our dedicated and fun Development & Operations committee, contact our small, but dedicated staff at SRIV. Leave your name and number at 401-552-7661 or email info@southernrivol.org.
We also welcome individuals to our strategy & finance team. Our finance volunteers oversee monthly financial reporting, consider agency direction, services offered that fit SRIV’s mission and may be a community need. Our Strategy & Finance committee meets the 2nd Monday of each month by zoom from 6:30 to 7:30 pm. To learn more, contact Lindsay, our Executive Director at SRIV. Leave your name and number at 401-552-7661 or email info@southernrivol.org.
Meals on Wheels How about being a volunteer “sub”. Be on our call list to see if you might occasionally be available to deliver meals on wheels in the South Kingstown, Narragansett and Exeter areas. This is only an occasional opportunity or a sub opportunity for a regular volunteer who is away for any length of time. Very flexible and not a regular commitment for those who need that.
SRIV also recruits volunteers for the Charlestown RI meals on wheels route. Charlestown is all set at this time. SRIV also partners with Meals on Wheels of RI for the routes in Richmond, Hopkinton and Westerly. Subs are always in need for these routes.
RICAN food pantry is looking for volunteers to help in the thrift shop. There is a need especially on Tuesday and Saturday at this time.
Hoping to meet you soon and welcome you to the team.
SRIV can be reached at 401-552-7661 Monday through Friday between 9 am and 4 pm or by email at info@southernrivol.org.
