Many have long talked of the conspiracy of the greeting card. Thought to be the ploy of card companies to celebrate everything from mothers’ day to fathers’ day to birthdays, anniversaries, weddings, births, and on and on and on. BUT there is nothing wrong with celebrating the best we have to offer as humans to our world, our community, our families and beyond. So, buy your cards if you wish and celebrate everything that is good, uplifting and joyful. Send a card to a volunteer to say thank you! Now, we would like to take a moment to share some of our volunteers’ stories maybe you’ll add volunteers to your card list to celebrate another! Cards are not required, but a sincere thank you for service is always appreciated. Thanks to you for caring.

WE ARE CELEBRATING OUR SILENT HEROES—VOLUNTEERS AT SRIV AND ACROSS OUR COMMUNITIES!

Volunteers are people who actively engage in helping another, helping a cause they are passionate about and adding meaningful value to their life journey, experiences and to the journeys and experiences of others.

I have had the privilege of working with SRIV volunteers for 22 years and counting as the Executive Director and now I continue to work with our volunteers in a different role at the office and as a volunteer, myself. In my mid-60s now, I have some of those options that allow us to work fewer hours and provide us time to do some of the activities that enhance our life journey. So my activities are all about my family, husband, children, grandchildren, our horses, my kids’ dogs and extended family by enjoying time with them around great food, fun games and family time, vacations and more. My activities include art, I love to create painted wood pieces that add to a home’s welcome; most of my art is for the outdoors as I also love working in my gardens—they bring me joy and peace. But even with this full life and great times, I have some time to volunteer. I believe volunteering is what makes us all part of a collective great community—a wonderful place to call home, a place to live, to grow, to age, and to love! I invite you to join me. Why do I volunteer, it’s simple it matters not only to the other life but to mine; If you make a difference in one life other than your own along your journey then you have indeed achieved a great life success—you mattered to more than just yourself. Congrats! National Volunteer Month is April, I have purposely waiting to after May 1st to print this piece to make sure we all know that volunteering and helping is important 12 months not just one!

So as we celebrate every one of the over 400 volunteers at SRIV, here are the reasons in their own words as to why a handful of our volunteers engage to make a difference;

Mike G: For the last 30 years, I have been involved with nonprofit agencies. Many times, serving as a board member and some as a committee member. I have served in every capacity on boards; from Committee Chair to Secretary to Treasurer to Vice Chair/President to Chair/President. Some of the boards I have been on include Meals on Wheels of RI, Mentoring RI, Education Exchange, The Association of Fundraising Professionals and currently The Academic Decathlon.

I joined SRIV just over a year ago, I became the Chair of the Board of Directors recently of an incredible agency, located in Charlestown, RI, Southern Rhode Island Volunteers is all about service. This agency provides several services for the senior population of RI’s southernmost 12 cities and towns. I hope more to follow in future years.

Some of these vital services for our senior neighbors are food shopping, food delivery, transportation to and from doctor and medical offices, companionship to alleviate isolation, rolling library delivery service and more to support independent aging.

SRIV’s team is a dedicated staff of 3 incredible women, an amazingly supportive board of directors, and over 400 giving volunteers! I firmly believe the best gift to my life is the satisfaction I get from helping these agencies to complete their mission and vision. At SRIV, that is service to others that is extremely rewarding. Volunteerism can be rewarding for everyone, as long as you put the energy and effort into your actions that help you meet your service goals.

Harriet & Art: Why are we volunteers? Why do people give up their time and sometimes their money to become volunteers? There is no greater feeling of satisfaction then when one human being assists another. As retirees, we feel we need to spend our time wisely. Helping other people to stay in their homes as they age is something we understand as seniors. It’s been shown that people who help other people live healthier and happier lives. It just feels nice to do something for someone else. The people we assist as volunteers are so grateful. They tell us so and we can see it in their faces!

We also want to set a good example for our children and our grandchildren. If they see our willingness to assist others, they may find the time to do something nice for someone else. It’s important for younger people to feel an obligation to help others. We have lived much of our adult life volunteering. and we have implanted the idea that serving others as volunteers is good for the soul.

Pat: I enjoy volunteering to meet new people and to be involved in my community. I am able to use my learned skills and time to help others. Volunteering is an important opportunity to connect with people who share interests and enjoy working together on a shared project or activity. Assisting nonprofits with important work and activities allows me to gain knowledge from others while learning about other cultures. Enjoyment in trying new and different volunteer projects and the opportunities to learn something new give me a sense of accomplishment! I love the social interaction!

Tony S: It is a great honor to deliver meals on wheels through the Southern Rhode Island Volunteers program for our many seniors, some who might be housebound, have medical issues or have financial problems. The meals I deliver are very diverse and nutritious. During the delivery I get to know the seniors; friendships are developed and loneliness is eliminated. The meals on wheels of RI project accepts donations from the seniors for the food but they never refuse anyone due to cost. Southern Rhode Island Volunteers receives no compensation for this service except for those donations from community members who support SRIV. Delivering meals for the past 12 years has been a very rewarding experience and I have enjoyed my friendships with so many fine seniors.

Alesia: I spent my career in the healthcare field and believe that volunteering for non-profit organizations dedicated to helping those in need is a perfect fit in retirement. SRIV provides invaluable services to older residents in southern Rhode Island allowing them to maintain their quality of life and the dignity they deserve as they age. What better way to serve our community, knowing we will all need additional services as we age — and that organization like SRIV will only be a phone call away!

Toni T: The reason I volunteer is it gives me a sense of purpose. It makes me feel useful. Maybe it’s a selfish attitude but I enjoy meeting new people and helping out where I can.

Mike B: I volunteer so I can try to be a positive impact on the South Kingstown community. As I’ve continued to volunteer around town, I’ve learned the power that a smile and a conversation can have. It always brings a smile to my face to see the same faces each week, to check in and to chat. I’m happy to give just a little bit of my time to help the seniors around SK, and they’ve had a huge impact on me!

SRIV’S Deb Tanner honored with the Paul Harris Fellow Award by Chariho Rotary Club

Kudos to SRIV’s former Executive Director and current Development Director, Deb Tanner for being named a Paul Harris Fellow by the Chariho Rotary Club. Deb is humbled by this wonderful honor and told us that she accepts this award in honor of the hundreds of volunteers she has had the privilege to work with for just over 2 decades.

The Paul Harris Fellow recognition acknowledges individuals who contribute to their communities in substantial ways. A $1,000 contribution in honor of the fellow is made to the Rotary Foundation. The Chariho Rotary Club has long been a champion of many causes and needs across the Chariho communities. Members of this club exemplify the Rotary motto of Service Above Self; something that the volunteers of SRIV and the members of the Chariho Rotary have in common. Thank you to the rotary for recognizing this woman that SRIV sees as our own champion, even though she’d like to be just thought of as one of the team!’
